Conservation Caretaker Experience

IMG_2018a (2)Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work with animals in a conservation breeding center? Are you interested in a career in conservation or animal care? Come experience it for yourself by spending a day working alongside our wildlife specialists caring for our amazing animals! You will get the exclusive opportunity to work behind the scenes at White Oak with some of the rarest animals on earth including rhino, okapi and cheetah. Throughout the day you will visit each of our four focus areas, carnivores, antelope, rhino and birds, learning from specialists in the field about animal care and White Oak’s conservation efforts.

How do you convince a 6,000 lb. rhino to move or medicate the fastest land mammal, the cheetah? These are just a few of the things you will learn while participating in all aspects of animal care, from prepping the food that goes into the animals to removing the waste that comes out. You may even get to observe a routine medical procedure or neonate exam of a new born baby.  So roll up your sleeves, put on some comfortable shoes and join us in getting dirty for conservation. Proceeds from the Conservation Caretaker Experience go towards the conservation of species worldwide.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will I get to pet the animals?

A: For animal and human well-being and safety we do not physically interact with most of our animals. There may be limited opportunities to touch an animal, like one of our rhinos. Participants are expected to follow the instructions of staff at all times.

Q: Can I take pictures?

A: You are welcome to take photos, however you may be asked not to take photos when it could distract from the task at hand, and there may be specific areas where photography is limited. Our staff will be taking photos to document your day.

Q: What should I wear and bring?

A: We recommend wearing clothing and shoes that you won’t mind getting dirty. Weather appropriate outdoor clothing like long pants or shorts, and t-shirts are recommended. Bring a comfortable pair of work boots or tennis shoes (shoes must be close toed) as you will be on your feet much of the day. You may wish to bring a hat, rain jacket, sunscreen, or bug spray dependent on weather and time of year. We highly recommend bringing a large refillable water bottle. Lunch is provided as part of the experience but you may wish to bring a light snack with you.

Q: Can I request working with certain species?

A: We will do our best to incorporate your species of interest into the day however, due to the variability of daily events we cannot guarantee access or interactions with any specific species or animal during experiences.
